Recently, the second China Rare Opera Exhibition kicked off in Boxing County, Binzhou City, Shandong Province. This high-level artistic event, featuring 36 rare operas from across the country, has become a vital platform to showcase the diversity of Chinese opera culture to the world.As the only invited puppet troupe in this exhibition, the Zizhong County Puppet Troupe from Neijiang, Sichuan, captivated the audience with the national intangible cultural heritage piece"The Adventures of Young Zhang Daqian," performed in the distinctive medium-sized rod puppet style. With artistic expressions that embody the unique charm of the Bashu region, the troupe brought the allure of Chinese puppet theater to the land of Qilu (Shandong), while also opening a new window for overseas audiences to appreciate the richness of China's outstanding traditional culture.

This exhibition rigorously selected outstanding works from 111 submitted productions nationwide, establishing itself as a premier event in the field of preserving and inheriting China’s rare operas. During the exhibition, cultural exchange activities such as master lectures and play enhancement seminars were also held, accumulating practical experience for the international promotion of China’s rare operas. The performance of Zizhong puppet theater allowed this ancient art rooted in the land of Bashu to become a vivid example of how China’s rare operas are making their way to the world stage.

"The Adventures of Young Zhang Daqian" follows the youthful journey of the master Chinese painter Zhang Daqian, skillfully integrating traditional Chinese puppet art with Sichuan opera culture. It incorporates classic Sichuan opera techniques such as face-changing and fire-spitting into the puppet performance, achieving an innovative expression of intangible cultural heritage. The troupe’s performers, with their exquisite manipulation skills, achieve an artistic effect of unity between puppeteer and puppet, combining form and spirit. On stage, the puppets embody both the rich charm of Sichuan opera and the agility and delicacy of puppet art. The lively, compact plot and the exquisite, vivid performance fully demonstrate the unique artistic allure of Zizhong medium-sized rod puppet theater, while also showcasing the superb craftsmanship and cultural depth of Chinese puppet theater to the world.

During the performance, the Zizhong Puppet Theatre captivated the audience with its distinctive artistic form and profound Eastern aesthetic appeal, becoming the focal point of the exhibition and earning widespread acclaim from both domestic and international spectators. Some viewers remarked that integrating Sichuan opera's face-changing into puppet performances presented a far greater challenge than live human performance, representing not only a continuation of traditional craftsmanship but also a bold artistic innovation. Others noted that this work has infused traditional puppet theatre with new vitality, blending profound cultural heritage with contemporary aesthetics, enabling younger generations to appreciate the charm of traditional Chinese opera. This expression, rich in cultural depth and artistic power, has positioned Zizhong puppet theatre as a vehicle for transcending linguistic and cultural barriers, laying a solid foundation for its international dissemination.
To achieve the best artistic effect, the Zizhong County Puppet Theatre, under the guidance of the Sichuan Provincial Theatre Association, conducted multiple rounds of meticulous refinement of the production. The troupe’s director, Hu Hai, stated that the team has always adhered to the principle of preserving tradition while pursuing innovation. On the foundation of inheriting intangible cultural heritage craftsmanship, they continuously explore new creative approaches, striving to ensure that Zizhong puppet theatre not only retains the essence of Bashu culture but also aligns with international aesthetic perspectives.
